Review: Shake Shack, Cardiff’s newest burger bar

The first ever UK Shake Shack outside of London will open its doors today, on the first floor of St. David’s Shopping Centre in Cardiff. If you fancy dining in a burger bar chain beloved by President Obama himself, here’s what you can expect.

The menu

This features all of the usual, American ‘Shack favourites’, including the ShackBurger and the Shack-cago Dog (that’s a hot dog topped with relish, onion, cucumber, pickle, tomato, sport pepper, celery salt and mustard, to you and me).

I was pleased to discover that all of the Cardiff Shack’s burgers are made with ‘humanely raised’ 100% Aberdeen Angus beef, whilst the SmokeShack, includes rashers of British free-range Wiltshire cure smoked bacon. Meanwhile, the flat-top hotdog section of the menu features a Cumberland-Style Sausage handmade by Jimmy’s Farm using East Anglia free-range pork, and for the veggies, the awesome ‘Shroom Burger is a deep-fried, cheese-filled, mushroom delight – I first tried one of these on holiday, and it made the list of my favourite meals from my American trip.

The menu also features a complete craft beer and wine list. Guests can choose from a selection of hand-picked brews selected from the local Celt Experience Brewing as well as the award winning  Newport superstars Tiny Rebel Brewing Co. They also have their own ShackMeister Ale (brewed exclusively for Shake Shack), and for the wine lovers, Shack Red and Shack White (which is bottled exclusively for them in Languedoc-Roussillon, France).

Shake Shack Cardiff

The launch was very busy!

And for dessert?

Shake Shack’s ‘frozen custard’ (which is actually dense, creamy ice-cream) will be featured in shakes and ‘concretes’ (which is frozen custard, blended at speed with other flavours and ingredients mixed in). The Cardiff Shack includes three locally-inspired ‘concretes’, with mix-ins derived from local partners. The flavours are:

  •  Union Shack  – chocolate custard, St. JOHN Bakery chocolate hazelnut brownie, fudge sauce, paul.a.young chocolate chunks and Maldon salt.
  • Cardiff Crunch-Stellation – vanilla custard, malt powder, chocolate chunks and chocolate toffee.
  • Welsh Cake Jam  – vanilla custard, crumbled welsh cake from Fabulous Welsh Cakes and strawberry jam. In keeping with Shake Shack’s mission to Stand For Something Good, the Cardiff Shack has partnered with local homeless charity The Wallich  to donate 5% of sales from this one – so get munching!

The staff are lovely too.

Welcome to Cardiff, Shake Shack!
