Review: Lunch at Oscars of Cowbridge

After more than a decade in business, popular Vale of Glamorgan hotspot Oscars of Cowbridge has been given a bold new makeover.

Whilst the previous interior included bright green walls, functional furniture and dated light fittings, now the 70-cover space boasts an more of a ‘chic’ look: copper-cladding, cosy tan leather booths and a rich teal and orange colour scheme, complimented by  gold accents and bold geometric prints.

The redesign also accompanies a refreshed food and drink menu of comfort food and poshed-up “diner-style” meals – including  an interesting ‘cauliflower steak’ dish I just had to try for myself.

Roasted, generously buttered cauliflower is served with chimichurri sauce, chargrilled asparagus, roasted cherry tomatoes and a hefty pile of crispy sweet potato fries (£10.50). I know I have a bit of a thing for cauliflower but as far as veggie comfort food goes, for me this is up there with the best.

Other menu highlights I’ve got my eye on include local, Gower coast mussels in garlic and white wine served with skinny fries (£9.95) and a chargrilled halloumi burger with red pepper tapenade & chips – which looked absolutely massive (£9.50). There are meatier options on the menu of course (steak, burgers, duck, lamb and pork), so it’s a good spot if you have a mixed group of friends or family, and need to be able to please everyone.

As well as the food, the drinks menu has been updated too, and now includes a number of local suppliers such as Pipes, Eccentric Gin, The Celt Experience & Penderyn. They also have Brooklyn Beer on tap if American booze is more your thing.

A range of classic cocktails are also on offer

I really love the new-look bar area at Oscars the most, although it’s now made me desperate to build one in my house and get some of those swanky studded seats.

There’s no denying that Cowbridge is a bit of a mission to get to (at 30 minutes drive from the centre of Cardiff) – but an afternoon spent on a long lunch at Oscar’s and a leisurely browse of the various independent shops and boutiques on Cowbridge High St – is certainly an afternoon well spent. Give it a go.

I was invited to Oscars as a guest and as a result, my meal was complimentary. This has not affected my opinion and I was not obliged to write a positive review.

So good! Nice to see something other than a veggie burger or a salad on the menu 🙂
