Just in time for the Christmas rush, two of Cardiff’s city centre hotels have given their in-house bars a fancy refurb.
The Goods Shed @ Novotel
Firstly, ‘The Goods Shed’ is a stylish restaurant and bar located in the Novotel Hotel on Schooner Way, Atlantic Wharf. Open from 12pm until 11pm, it’s intended to be a great place for lunch with colleagues – particularly from the nearby capital quarter – or somewhere to sip cocktails with friends on a Saturday night.
With exposed brickwork, iron fittings and original wooden beams, the interior follows the ever-popular industrial trend; the atrium roof also provides lots of natural light in the day and some nice reflections by night.
The Goods Shed has taken plenty of inspiration from the building’s past. From 1875, the building functioned as one of the ‘Goods Sheds’ belonging to the London and North Western Railway at Bute Docks. As a result, the food and drink offerings nod toward the history of the Railway Network, (which stretched from South Wales to London) by including items like Herefordshire beef and London beer. Whilst I didn’t try much of the food on opening night, the espresso martinis were to die for – I’ll certainly be back for a couple more of those in the near future!
Grey @ The Hilton
‘Grey’ is the stylish new bar which has opened in the window-lined conservatory of the Hilton hotel on Kingsway.The menu has been created by Head Chef Mark Freeman (previously of Laguna Kitchen and Bar) and offers modern European dishes championing local and Welsh products wherever possible.
Dishes on Mark’s menu include slow cooked Welsh lamb shank bubble ‘n’ squeak; The Grey Croque Monsieur – wrapped in Carmarthen ham and welsh rarebit; and The ‘Ultimate’ Lobster Club Sandwich.
The bar is intended to be a chic spot to stop by for a drink and a bite, and will stock a comprehensive range of cocktails, premium spirits (including gin from Cardiff), craft beers from local breweries and an ‘affordable’ wine list.
Sadly, I couldn’t make it to the Grey launch, but local blogger Explore With Ed‘s review suggests he approves!
