Review: Amaryllis Eco Friendly Hair Salon, Cardiff

Nestled at the bottom Cowbridge Road East, and conveniently located at the edge of ‘town’, Canton, Riverside and Pontcanna, is Amaryllis salon. Four years ago, two friends Tiffany and Rebecca set up the salon together, and thanks to their continued sucess, they recrntly moved in to a bigger, brighter premises just a couple of doors down. I’ve been getting my hair cut at Amaryllis since they first opened. Every time I’ve visit, I love the contrast from the hustle-bustle of Castle Street versus their little oasis of calm. Rebecca and Tiffany, are also are two of the friendliest, warmest and most genuine ladies I’ve ever met, and always make feel so welcome and at ease.

Plus Senior Stylist Stacy is a wizard who can get my curly, frizzy hair to look like this…!

Exclusive Davines Products

The Amaryllis team are not only passionate about hair, they also care deeply about  the environment. They are the only salon in the country to offer (and use) products by Davines, an Italian haircare brand who have an impressive commitment to sustainability. Their production plants and offices have been completely powered by renewable energy since 2006, meaning that every product formulated, designed and produced by Davines has been created with 100% clean energy.

Davines also commit to sourcing their ingredients as ethically as possible, and have been holding a ‘Sustainable Beauty Day’ once a year since 2010. This involves donating all of the profits from one day of trade in their salons to socio-environmental projects as the creation and protection of forest areas and environmental upgrading.

Davines products

If you’re a fan of changing your hair colour on the reg, you’ll love Davines. Tiffany from Amaryllis explained, Davines colour is so superior, because their Vibrachrom™ technology uses a quinoa protein extract and omega 3 to ensure the hair is coloured with strength, a high conditioning effect, shine and outstanding durability.”
The quinoa itself is grown in Peru in a way that benefits and respects the local population and landscape. It’s pretty groundbreaking stuff!

An eco-friendly ethos

As well as exclusively using Davines’ eco-friendly products, the salon itself has been decorated using reclaimed fixtures and fittings and includes a green ‘living wall’ which I love. They also hold regular clothes swap events to encourage a more sustainable approach to fashion, use Neals Yard Organic essential oils in their room sprays, and offer clients a mean selection of Pukka organic herbal teas and vegan Pipes beers. You can see why I love them!

The verdict

Tiff and Rebecca have obviously worked very hard over the last few years to get Amaryllis to where it is today – I was thrilled to see them moved in to their new, bigger, better salon. Before you go back to your usual hairdresser for your next cut and colour, consider giving the Amaryllis team a try, I’m convinced you’ll love it. There’s 20% off for new clients, too!

You can find Amaryllis on Cowbridge Road East. They are also contactable via their website, on Twitter, and on Facebook. See their up to date price list here.
