Review: Amaryllis Eco Friendly Hair Salon, Cardiff

Review: Amaryllis Eco Friendly Hair Salon, Cardiff

Nestled at the bottom Cowbridge Road East, and conveniently located at the edge of ‘town’, Canton, Riverside and Pontcanna, is Amaryllis salon. Three years ago, two friends Tiffany and Rebecca set up the salon, and thanks to their success ever since, they have just moved in to a bigger premises a couple of doors down. I’ve been getting my hair cut at Amaryllis since they first opened. Every time I’ve visit, I love coming in from the loud hustle-bustle of Castle Street and in to their little oasis of calm. Rebecca and Tiffany, are also are two of the friendliest, warmest and most genuine hair stylists I’ve ever met, and always make feel so welcome and at ease.

Plus they get my curly, frizzy hair to look like this!

An eco-friendly ethos

The Amaryllis team are not only passionate about hair, they also care deeply about  the environment. They are the only salon in the country to offer (and use) products by Davines, an Italian haircare brand who have an impressive commitment to sustainability. Their production plants and offices have been completely powered by renewable energy since 2006, meaning that every product formulated, designed and produced by Davines has been created with 100% clean energy.

Davines products
Davines also commit to using bio-degradable packaging wherever possible (recyclable at the least), source their ingredients as ethically as possible. They have even been holding a ‘Sustainable Beauty Day’ once a year since 2010. This involves donating all of the profits from one day of trade in their salons to socio-environmental projects as the creation and protection of forest areas and environmental upgrading. It’s impressive stuff.

As well as using Davines products exclusively, the Amaryllis salon includes a green ‘living wall’, has been decorated using reclaimed fixtures and fittings. They also use Neals Yard Organic essential oils in their room sprays, and offer clients a mean selection of Pukka organic herbal teas and vegan Pipes beers.

The verdict

I love Amaryllis, and Tiff and Rebecca have obviously worked very hard over the last few years so I am thrilled to see them moved in to their new, bigger, better salon. Before you go back to your usual hairdresser for your next cut and colour, consider giving Amaryllis a try, I’m convinced you’ll love it. There’s 20% off for new clients, too!

You can find Amaryllis on Cowbridge Road East. They are also contactable via their website, on Twitter, and on Facebook. See their up to date price list here.
