Eating meat free is sometimes associated with ‘going without’ – but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Whether you’re a fully fledged vegan or just trying to eat less and better meat, there are loads of reasons to make meat-free mealtimes a regular thing, and you can be sure to find something tasty on the menu at any of these spots.
From healthy salads to rainbow wraps, there is plenty of choice around the city.
Cardiff Vegetarian & Vegan Restaurants
1. Anna Loka
Cardiff’s first-ever fully vegan restaurant, this place has become a bit of an institution – and bloody good it is too. Try the vegan fry up, the burgers, the open mushroom tacos (my fave) or the legendary Sunday roast.
This 100% vegan bakery was opened thanks to the generous donations to a crowdfunding campaign. Now this uber-instagrammable coffee shop sells a mouth watering selection of homemade vegan donuts, cupcakes and bakes in interesting flavours. They also make beautiful celebration cakes to order.
Situated in the beautiful old Morgan Arcade, Crumbs is a bit of an institution. They serve a range of hot and cold, tasty vegetarian and vegan food (think salad bowls, soups and picnic-worthy picky things) in Cardiff city centre.
Situated inside Cardiff’s old market hall, Clancy’s is a fab little veggie food stall, just perfect for a quick lunch. Bean burgers, butternut bhajis, and superfood bakes are available ready-to-eat hot, or cold to take away and enjoy at home. I love the Halloumi slammers!
5. Greazy Vegan
After taking the pop-up scene by storm with their brand of filthy, cruelty-free fast food, the Greasy Vegan gang set up a permanent home opposite Cardiff Castle at the entrance to Castle Arcade. Watch the video below to see founder Will make his vegan ‘vonner kebab’:
The Lazy Leek ‘shack’ looks just like a garden shed, but this mini-kitchen at Kings Road Yard in Pontcanna actually serves up some of the best plant-based burgers and badass sides you’re ever likely to eat. Try the new ‘Finding Nori’ burger; white wine and dill marinated tofu coated in beer batter, with pea & mint yoghurt, tartare sauce and sweet pickled red onions. Oooft.
This Pontcanna salad bar and sarnie shop offers a mostly-veggie menu. Expect huge plates of filling, healthy fare; this is where I go when I need to feel fixed after a weekend of over indulgence. They also host occasional supper clubs and kitchen take-overs. Owner Kemi is just fab.
This no-frills, BYOB restaurant has been the stalwart of the veggie scene in Cardiff for years. Expect a menu chocked full of Indian vegetarian specialities; try the extra hot chilli pakoras served with tamarind chutney. Mouth-wateringly spicy!
9. Wild Thing
This non profit cafe aims to make good food accessible for all – offering up healthy plant-based meals with a pay what you can afford approach (they have suggested prices for those who can afford it). Think warming hot drinks, cakes and an eclectic menu of salads, stews and bowl foods to feed the soul. They also make their own pastries and breads in-house.
