Looking for a gift for the discerning foodie in your life? Passionate about supporting independents?
I might have the perfect stress-free suggestion for you; the FOR Cardiff gift card. This nifty little life-saver is redeemable at more than fifty independent Cardiff businesses, including handful of my favourite city centre delis and restaurants.
What is a FOR Cardiff gift card?
The FOR Cardiff gift card was created by the Cardiff business improvement district, FOR Cardiff. They’re a business-led, not for profit organisation with an ambitious plan to transform Cardiff city centre, and make it more welcoming for all who spend time in it.
The gift card scheme was introduced to help support the high number of independent businesses in Cardiff’s city centre. It doesn’t require any additional technology for businesses to accept the cards – if they have a reader with a swipe facility then they’re good to go. FOR Cardiff also don’t ask for a cut of any sales through the gift cards and never will, so 100% of the spend goes directly back to the independent businesses that the cards are used in.
The gift cards themselves can be purchased online at cardiffgiftcard.com.
Where can you spend it?
The best thing about buying (or receiving) a FOR Cardiff gift card is the you know that the spend will be going towards helping city-centre independent businesses to thrive.
You can redeem the FOR Cardiff gift card in more than 50 bars, shops and restaurants. This means you could use it on anything from a romantic dinner for two, to a night of cocktails with the girls, a new rugby jersey, a bottle of posh plonk or even an escape room experience.
So where did I spend mine?
FOR Cardiff recently gifted me with a £50 card, and free reign to spent it where I saw fit. I knew where I’d be going the minute I got my grubby little hands on it; for a slap-up Saturday lunch at the lovely Asador 44.
The lunchtime menu at this excellent Spanish restaurant (one of my faves) is an absolute steal. On the day we visited, Eat Weekly and I enjoyed this delicious starter of bang-in-season crispy calcots:
Next up, a surprise treat between courses; a squid-ink crisp, topped with sardine and aioli:
And then, our £10 main courses – an absolute bargain. I don’t eat meat very often at all these days, but when I do, I want it to always be as lush as this rump cap, served with crispy chips and olive escalivada (roasted vegetables):
Incredibly, this lovely lunch for two came in at just £40 (and that included a glass of wine each, too), leaving me with £10 credit to spend elsewhere. A little wander around Cardiff’s gorgeous Victorian arcades eventually led me to Wally’s Liquor Cellar, where I picked up a few cans of craft beer from Pipes Brewery to take home to my other half.
