Eating fish and chips on the beach is one of life’s great simple pleasures, but now, Phill Lewis (Dusty Knuckle) has teamed up with Jon White, (formerly Nine Yards Café) to take seaside snacking to another level.
They’ve started a permanent seafood pop-up called ‘The Two Anchors’, and it’s based right on Ogmore beach.
The new venture focuses on simple, ingredient-led dishes created using sustainable, locally sourced seafood cooked over a huge, cast-iron fire pit.
What’s on the menu?
The menu will change week-on-week but is focused around four key principles;
- Bun: think cod-cheek ‘burgers’ and gourmet fish finger sandwiches
- Bowl: think fish curries and warming seafood risotto
- Fillet: simple, seasonal fish fillets
- Whole: a whole fish (e.g. sole or bream), served with sauce or a flavoured butter
Sides include charred baby-gem lettuce with garlic aioli, and grilled seasonal asparagus and artichoke. A selection of Dusty Knuckle’s signature wood fired pizzas will also be available on occasion.
Dusty Knuckle founder Phill explained, “When we found out about the pitch at Ogmore, we knew we had to have it. But we didn’t just want to stick to doing pizza, we wanted to do something that was really in-keeping with the location.”
Partner Jon continued, “We’ll be changing the menu regularly, experimenting with different recipes and ideas, so we’re hoping people will come back to visit us more than once over the summer. We just can’t wait to see what people think!”
The Two Anchors officially opened on Ogmore beach today, so I popped down to get a taste of what they’re cooking. I sampled a gently-spiced Goan fish curry, a whole sand sole fried in herb butter, and also managed to blag a forkful of an amazing side of salmon that had been nailed to a plank of beechwood and slow cooked next to the fire.

I’m kicking myself that I didn’t try the cod-cheek sandwich, but I will definitely be going back very soon!
When can you visit?
Phil and Jon will be at Ogmore every weekend (weather depending) until the school summer holidays. During the summer holidays, they plan to open all week-long.
