Nestled at the bottom Cowbridge Road East, and conveniently located at the edge of ‘town’, Canton, Riverside and Pontcanna, is Amaryllis salon.I’ve been getting my hair cut at Amaryllis since it first opened. Every time I’ve visited, I’ve loved the contrast from the hustle-bustle of Castle Street versus their little oasis of calm.
Two friends – Tiffany and Rebecca – set up the salon together. I’m not exaggerating when I say that they are two of the friendliest, warmest and most genuine ladies I’ve ever met, and always make feel so welcome and at ease. Plus, they somehow always manage to get my limp, frizzy hair to look like this…or this!
An eco-friendly ethos
The eco-friendly measures that Tiff and Rebecca have put in place at the salon is what really sets them apart. These include:
🌿 All chopped hair from the salon is sent off to be turned into hair booms & mats to protect the oceans from oil spills.
🌿 All used hair foils are also sent off and recycled.
🌿 Toilet paper in the customer loo from Who Gives A Crap – this is made from 100% recycled bamboo, and 50% of profits help to build toilets and improve sanitation in the developing world.
🌿 10% off new purchases if you bring your old Davines hair product containers back for recycling.
🌿 Snake plants & cactus dotted around the salon to purify the air & provide oxygen.
Exclusive Davines Products
Amaryllis is also the only salon in the country to offer (and use) products by Davines, a B-corp, Italian haircare brand who have an impressive commitment to sustainability. Davines’ production plants and offices have been completely powered by renewable energy since 2006, meaning that every product formulated, designed and produced by the company has been created with 100% clean energy.
Davines also commit to sourcing their ingredients as ethically as possible, and have been holding a ‘Sustainable Beauty Day’ once a year since 2010. This involves donating all of the profits from one day of trade in their salons to socio-environmental projects as the creation and protection of forest areas and environmental upgrading.
Tiff and Rebecca have obviously worked so hard over the last few years to get Amaryllis to where it is today – a forward thinking salon operating in the most sustainable way possible. Before you go back to your usual hairdresser for your next cut and colour, consider giving the Amaryllis team a try, I’m convinced you’ll love it. And, they offer 20% off for new clients!
