If you’ve made it one of your 2021 resolutions to try and eat more seasonal, local produce – these monthly blog posts are for you.
In each one, I try to demystify ‘seasonal eating’ a little bit, by sharing some simple info on the fruit, veg, meat & fish in season now – along with some ideas for how to cook & eat it.
SO WHAT’S IN SEASON IN THE UK IN JANUARY?
Look out for UK grown Apples, Beetroot, Brussels Sprouts, Carrots, Celeriac, Celery, Chicory, Jerusalem Artichokes, Kale, Leeks, Mushrooms, Onions, Parsnips, Pears, Red Cabbage, Salsify, Savoy Cabbage, Spring Greens, Spring Onions, Squash, Swedes, Turnips, and White Cabbage. If you’re fancy, now’s also the time to for Black Truffle.
Forced rhubarb also begins in January – the majority of which is grown in Yorkshire after being awarded Protected Designation of Origin status in 2010.
And when it comes to meat and fish, look out for sustainable Goose, Guinea Fowl, Hare, and Venison. Fish can be scarce at this time of year, but you can look out for local Pollock and Whiting.
SIX SEASONAL RECIPES I’LL BE COOKING THIS MONTH
As it looks like we won’t be able to eat out properly for a long while yet, these are the seasonal recipes I’ll be trying in my kitchen this month.
- The Celeriac & Potato Gratin pictured above – inspired by an early episode of Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall’s River Cottage.
- My Cauliflower, Kale & Chickpea traybake – an easy recipe I shared with Love Food, Hate Waste.
- These Slow Cooker Honey Glazed Carrots from Salt & Lavender (I made these for Christmas lunch to save on oven space!)
- This River Cottage Curried Root Soup – I’ll make mine using swede & potato from my Riverford veg box.
- This Pollock with a Cheddar & Herb Crust from Chef Nathan Outlaw (via Great British Chefs).
- These Spiced Kale Chips from BBC Good Food.
