Cardiff’s Pettigrew Bakeries has been named among the UK’s best artisan bakeries in British Baker’s newly revealed Britain’s Best Artisan Bakeries 2026.
Over the last decade, the family-owned bakery has become a proper Cardiff institution, winning hearts via brilliant bread, obsessive lamination, and pastries that regularly go viral; their crème brûlée croissant has basically achieved cult status locally, with their new pistachio creation (pictured above) likely to follow suit.
Ten years in the making
Pettigrew has long been one of Cardiff’s pioneers of craft sourdough, known for loaves made with organic flour and a long fermentation process; that “bread-first” foundation has grown into a broader patisserie and laminated pastry line-up that’s only getting better.

They’ve also got serious industry creds: Pettigrew Bakeries was named Craft Bakery Business of the Year at the UK Baking Industry Awards in 2024, with judges praising the business model and the passion across the team.
Theirs is also a story of slow graft and serious craft. Since first opening opposite Victoria Park in Canton, the business has expanded across the city and now operates from multiple Cardiff locations, alongside weekly trading at Cardiff Farmers Markets.

Today, you’ll find Pettigrew across four outposts – including the original Victoria Park Canton site, Roath’s Moy Road garage bakery, retail bakery/café spaces in Rhiwbina Village and Castle Arcade in the city centre – plus stalls at the Friday/Saturday/Sunday Cardiff Farmers Markets in Rhiwbina, Roath and Riverside.
So if you needed an excuse to plan a weekend bakery run? Consider it handed to you on a sugar-glazed, pistachio-crumbed plate.
