Moving house at any age is an unhinged, torturous experience.
Buying alone after a massive break up is equal parts “wow, I am a literal boss lady” and “what am I doing, I hate this, shall I just go and live in a hostel for the rest of my life.” I am only half-joking.
After finding myself buying a home by myself at 40, something has shifted in me. And it’s shifted something in this blog, too.
For years, Hungry City Hippy has been somewhere to write food – and life – through a sustainability lens. That part of me hasn’t gone anywhere and it never will.
It started with this blog (before Instagram was even invented, ya girl is old) and then spread onto my social media channels, and has absolutely helped me carve out a comms career working in the space where food, hospitality and sustainability all intersect (see here).
But it’s been over a decade since ‘HungryCityHippy’ started and the name just doesn’t fit me any more. It makes me feel like a teenager on MySpace. Or MSN Messenger. Or Bebo. Remember those! 😅
I am different now – and I don’t just mean the grey hairs. My work and interests lean further into hospitality, experience, and an honest kind of affordable comfort.
So going forward, you’re going to see a new name – HUNGRY. And that means more posts here that will sit in the overlap of:
- Cardiff – always the root
- Restaurants, bars, hotels – the experience of hospitality
- Considered travel – ‘worth it’ experiences, home and away
- Making a house a home on my own, one decision (spiral) at a time
The sustainability slant isn’t going; it’s just not going to be the dry headline every time. It’ll be the quiet filter in the background.
And just to be clear: all of the old Hungry City Hippy content is staying right here on the site. The archive still exists, and it always will. This is a new chapter, not a wipe-and-rewrite (2014 Jane could never).
Going Out, Staying In
I’ll still be sharing the latest restaurant and hospitality updates I have inside access to, the favourite spots – they’re a big part of my life via my day job, so they’re not going anywhere. But you’ll also start seeing more of domestic stuff, and the little luxuries. The tiny wins that make a new chapter feel more mine.
- Going out: Cardiff, hospitality, travel, my favourite places, the great nights, the good days – and the experiences that feel like someone cared.
Staying in: Making a house a home, figuring out what’s worth spending my money on, and trying to make more sustainable choices without one long guilt spiral!
