Higher Welfare Meat Menus

Want to eat meat, but care about how it’s been produced? Here is a handy list of some of the places where I have eaten, and know you can find high-welfare meat on the menu. I’ve done the London research so you don’t have to!

  • Barbecoa – Jamie Oliver’s amazing ‘BBQ Steakhouse’ serving ethically sourced meat cooked to perfection. Awesome views over St Paul’s Cathedral, too.
  • ClockJack Oven – Modern rotisserie restaurant in Soho specialising in spit-roasted free range birds and indulgent sauces and sides. Try the crispy chicken bites.
  • Clutch – All of the hens and eggs at this ‘posh fried chicken’ joint are free range and rare breed, and fried in groundnut oil. And my god, is that shit tasty or what. Pricey, but worth it!
  • Chipotle – A fast food Burrito joint who, wherever possible, use local suppliers, use meat from animals raised under higher welfare standards, and support sustainable practices.
  • The Duke of Cambridge – Britain’s first and only fully certified organic pub is in Islington, and it’s run by the same team behind Riverford Organic Veg.
  • Grain Store – The National Restaurant Awards named Grain Store the UK’s most Sustainable Restaurant in 2013. Although many dishes have a meat or fish element, vegetables are given equal billing, if not the starring role.
  • Island Grill – This contemporary hotel restaurant and bar overlooking Hyde Park has an all-day Modern European menu. All their produce is sourced as locally as possible, and they have three stars from the Sustainable Restaurants Association.
  • Jamie Oliver’s Diner American-inspired tourist trap at Piccadilly Circus which serves ‘fast food’ with a difference. Burgers, hot dogs, and fried chicken that is ethically produced and tasty, too.
  • Mother Clucker – The boys from the Mother Clucker mobile van serve mouthwatering  twice fried, free-range chicken, marinated in a sweet tea brine for over 12 hours, coated in buttermilk and a secret blend of spices.
  • T.E.D Restaurant – fab new restaurant in Kings Cross specialising in seasonal and ethically sourced Modern British food.
  • Wishbone – Free-range Cotswold white fried chicken served with craft beers and a soul music and hip-hop playlist. Sounds to good to be true!
