A new event will shine a light on the evolving local food scene in the Vale of Glamorgan – with a particular focus on showcasing sustainable food and drink. The inaugural Vale Food Trail will take place from 9th – 18th June and will include a calendar of events designed to bring people closer to food producers and businesses in the Vale, whilst deepening their connections with the surrounding community.

A new series of films from WWF Cymru hopes to highlight the ways in which Welsh farmers can adopt climate and nature friendly, regenerative farming practices. Farming is at the heart of how we use land in Wales; how we shape agriculture policy in this country is crucial to restoring nature, reducing emissions and providing healthy affordable, sustainable food for future generations.

This year’s Slow Food UK award winners have been named – and four of the Welsh winners are based right here in Cardiff.
Cardiff Farmers Market won best Welsh market, Pettigrew Bakeries picked up best Welsh bakers, Ashton’s was named best Welsh fishmonger, and Oriel Jones won best Welsh butcher (for the second time). Elsewhere in Wales, one of my favourite food businesses, Wrights Food Emporium (pictured above), picked up two awards for best Welsh deli and best Welsh restaurant.

During the pandemic, Farmers’ Markets became something of a life line – remaining open to the public due to their status as an essential businesses, and offering a safe, outdoorsy way to shop.
But these markets are also an excellent way to get closer to the people who grow and produce our food. They have the potential to offer the freshest, tastiest produce (some farmers even pick for the market on the very same day), and can help us to eat more seasonally by offering up the best of what’s in season now.
